This was good. Defining conservatism or the conservative disposition is a notoriously difficult task, and one that many writers have attempted. Have you read George Will’s Conservative Sensibility? It’s one of the books that’s worth reading when diving into this subject.

I think I would quibble with you a bit on the libertarianism point, although it depends who within the libertarian camp we’re talking about. Friedman, Hayek, Russ Roberts, Stephanie Slade, are all examples of libertarians who can be called conservative.

I’d also add that there’s a distinction between liberalism and republicanism and the task of American conservatives is to defend the Founders’ marriage of the two.

I enjoyed reading this. Seems like a good cliff notes version, but I might quibble with respect for institutions. They must occasionally demonstrate that it they are worthy of it--many today I would argue are lacking.

I'm more of a libertarian, but find myself more at ease amongst American conservatives than progressives. I find them to be far less threatening, and generally have more reluctance to use the state's monopoly of force compared to the left. Using that force because your ideas are better is the height of arrogance and a frequent source of human suffering.

To me, a cuban kid faking a political element to a beatdown, while both being in League of the South and on the GOP payroll, is 2022 conservatism. Both southern racist, yet also terroristic Cuban at the same time. Worst of both worlds, all the racism, all the terrorism.
